ECAT is a pre-requisite for admission in UET Lahore and its affiliated institutions and all other public sector engineering institutions in the Punjab. Some private institutions also require ECAT as a pre-requisite. ECAT is taken as multiple choice questions (MCQ). Each MCQ has 4 marks while there is a negative marking of -1 mark for wrong answer.

There are two types of groups in prerequisite test of engineering colleges and universities. There is a difference of a subject for both pre engineering and intermediate in computer science students. Test takers attempt multiple choice questions (MCQs) based on Physics, English, Mathematics, Computer Science or Chemistry.

ECAT Test Pattern:
ECAT test pattern is same for all the universities. Their test includes above mentioned four subjects. ECAT test consists 100 MCQ’s, each of them have 4 marks. There is also negative marking in it, for every correct answer there are 4 marks, on wrong answer -1 and if left it blank you get 0. Total time allowed for test is 100 mints. There MCQ’s are divided in the following way,
- Physics 30 MCQ’s
- Mathematics 30 MCQ’s
- Chemistry/Computer 30 MCQ’s
- English 10 MCQ’s
