MDCAT Test Format 2024 and Paper Pattern for Medical Entrance Test

Medical & Dental College Admission Test (MDCAT) is conducted in Pakistan each year for admission in MBBS and BDS degrees. MDCAT entry test conducted by University of Health Sciences (Lahore) in the Punjab. Previously, its name was Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) and new name was assigned previous year. Each year more then 55,000 students reach in this test while passed and selected students sit on some 3400 seats in public sector medical colleges and some 200 seats in public sector dental colleges of the Punjab. Medical and Dental College Admission Test (MDCAT) is one of the biggest test in Pakistan.

The entry test is based upon the subjects which students have taken at Higher Secondary School level. This exam is meant to check the ability and potential of a student. Every exam conducting body has same subjects, but the pattern may vary from each other.

MDCAT Test Format Paper Pattern:

The candidates have to solve the following pattern of MCQs from their concern key concepts of major subjects.

  1. Physics (44 MCQs)
  2. Chemistry (58 MCQs)
  3. English (30 MCQs)
  4. Biology (88 MCQs)

The duration of Test is consists of 150 minutes (2½ hours). Each question contains 05 marks hence the total marks are 1100. Five marks will be given for five correct answers whereas one mark will be deducted from the total score on each incorrect answer.

  • Each question carries 05 marks. Total marks, therefore, are 1100. The duration of Test will be 150 minutes (2½ hours).
  • There will be Negative Marking in the test. For each correct answer, 05 marks will be awarded whereas for each incorrect answer, one (01) mark will be deducted from the total score.
  • No negative ,marking will be done on not attempting a question.

Section-wise MCAT Exam Pattern:

The Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills section includes some experimental items which are unscored. Rest of the MCAT sections in the MCAT 2017 exam pattern are scored. The MCAT exam pattern of the sections is explained in details below:Chemical and Physical Foundations of Biological Systems: This section evaluates a candidate’s knowledge in general chemistry and physics. The Physical Sciences section is divided as follows:

  • Total of 59 questions
  • 10 passage-based sets of questions
  • 4–6 questions per set
  • 15 independent questions

Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills: As per the MCAT exam syllabus, this section includes content based on humanities, social sciences and natural sciences. It tests th candidate’s ability to understand, critically analyse and draw inferences from given arguments. The verbal reasoning section is divided as follows:

  • Total of 53 questions
  • 9 passages
  • 5–7 questions per passage

Biological and Biochemical Foundations of Living Systems: A candidate’s concepts in biology and organic chemistry is tested in this section. A candidate should have the desired problem-solving skills to solve this paper. The Biological Sciences section is divided as follows:

  • Total of 59 questions
  • 10 passage-based sets of questions
  • 4–6 questions per set
  • 15 independent questions

Psychological, Social, and Biological Foundations of Behavior: This section makes students to solve problems by combining knowledge of psychological, social and biological concepts with critical reasoning skills. The section is divided as below:

  • 15 independent questions
